We are proud to share the story of our first activity as an Association.
When we imagined this community project and defined its aims, we knew that one of the Institut d’Estudis de l’Horta’s missions would be to create a positive impact on the environment and the people who live within it.
Our first initiative was therefore to collect a crop of onions directly from the field. The farmer had unfortunately been unable to sell them after a disastrous season, so we donated them to two community kitchens.
We collected 20 kilograms of onions from a farmer’s field in Almàssera, whose support made the initiative possible. We donated the produce to Casa Caridad and Cocina Solidaria El Puchero, both in the city of Valencia.
This prevented food waste—the onions would otherwise have been ploughed back into the soil—and supported two Valencia community kitchens that provide meals for people in need.
