Food Waste Hub

Under the definition accepted by the European Commission, food waste means food or parts of food that remain fit for human consumption but, in the absence of an alternative use, are ultimately discarded as waste. This also includes the portion used as animal feed, but not food made into juice, jam or preserves.

Under the definition accepted by the European Commission, food waste means food or parts of food that remain fit for human consumption but, in the absence of an alternative use, are ultimately discarded as waste. This also includes the portion used as animal feed, but not food made into juice, jam or preserves.

Current official figures estimate that one third of the food produced for human consumption is lost or discarded along the supply chain.

Given the significance of this figure, the project uses public participation to identify the causes of food waste throughout the agri-food chain—farmers, supply-chain businesses, distributors, hospitality providers and consumers—and to propose solutions for the causes identified.

First, it is important to understand where most food loss and waste occurs in the value chain. The distribution is as follows:

The following video also shares some ideas on how we can all help reduce food waste:

Report on the causes of food waste at each stage of the chain and measures to reduce it

Drawing on lessons from the launch of the Food Waste Hub, we have produced a report examining the identified causes of food loss and waste at each stage of the agri-food chain. It also presents measures currently being taken to prevent, or at least reduce, this waste.

The report also includes innovative measures, many still in development, that have been introduced in recent years to help everyone reduce food waste at every stage of the chain.
