The Association took part in an initiative organised by Decathlon in June 2022. The activity included an environmental workshop and the sowing of native species with seed bombs in L’Albufera Natural Park.
The seed bombs were made from locally native seeds, growing medium and clay. Their composition protects the seeds from birds and other animals until rain helps them break down into the soil, greatly increasing the chance of germination.
This initiative was particularly valuable because it supported the restoration of native and endangered species in areas occupied by the invasive Hottentot fig (Carpobrotus edulis).
This succulent species is native to South Africa and adapts readily to arid conditions, allowing it to grow rapidly. It was once used to stabilise and restore dunes and in coastal landscaping, but subsequently spread and displaced the characteristic species of these habitats through competition.
The photograph below shows this now widespread species, which you may well recognise:

The NGO Xaloc and the Global Nature Foundation, working with the Generalitat Valenciana, have spent several years removing this invasive species, with successful results.
The next step, in which our Association took part following Decathlon’s call for volunteers, was to restore native species in L’Albufera Natural Park.Together, we can help our Natural Park recover.
