How to care for and disinfect your secateurs for a healthy garden

Learn how to keep your secateurs in excellent condition with simple cleaning, disinfection, sharpening and storage steps.

How to care for and disinfect your secateurs for a healthy garden

Secateurs are an essential tool for keeping plants healthy and well cared for. Without proper maintenance, however, they can become a source of infection that harms the health of a vegetable garden or ornamental garden.

Here is how to clean, disinfect and keep them in good condition.

1. Disinfect them to prevent disease

To avoid spreading fungi and bacteria between plants, disinfect your secateurs whenever you move on to another plant.

It is important to clean them before disinfecting them. Otherwise, dirt will prevent microorganisms from being removed properly. Wash the blades with warm water and mild soap, or wipe them with a cloth dampened with this solution.

Once clean, use a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol to disinfect them. There is no need to rinse the secateurs afterwards.

2. Clean after every use

After each pruning session, it is advisable to clean the secateurs before putting them away.

Use a dry cloth or brush to remove dirt from the blades, then clean the entire surface with water and mild soap.

Dry them thoroughly, or leave them in the sun for a while, to prevent rust.

Finally, disinfect the blades with a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

3. Sharpen and lubricate for better performance

Sharp secateurs make cleaner cuts and cause less damage to plants. To keep them in good condition:

  • Use a sharpening stone, such as a carbide stone, to sharpen the blades.
  • Apply lubricating oil, such as WD-40 or 3-IN-ONE, to prevent wear and rust. If you have no lubricating oil, you can use cooking oil, although it is less effective.
4. Store them correctly

Keep your secateurs in a dry place where they are protected. If possible, store them in a sheath or case to prevent dust and moisture from building up.

EXTRA: Removing ingrained dirt from the blade

Secateurs with ingrained dirt caused by disuse or poor maintenance can be restored by following these steps:

  • Fill a bucket with hot water and a little soap. Use a stiff-bristled or wire brush to scrub the blade and spring until all the dirt has been removed.
  • Dry the secateurs thoroughly.
  • If the blades have small nicks or dents, remove them with a sharpening stone or fine-toothed file. It is advisable to sharpen or file the blade from its outer edge towards the inside.
  • Disinfect the secateurs with a cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
  • Apply lubricating oil to prevent rust and extend their working life.
